ALL IN THE DETAILS: Get Loafer It!

July 7th, 2015 at 2:00am

It is so much easier to throw on simple neutral colors when heading out for the day as opposed to being more daring. I have a greater appreciation for people who try bolder looks on a day to day basis to change up their look and make a statement. Even though I am guilty of usually wearing neutral and subdued colors I always get excited when I see vibrant colors and patterns.

This Fashionista caught my eye because of her brightly colored top that upon closer look also had a very unique design. The pattern was a mixture of floral and geometric designs with white, turquoise and light blues. These are some of my favorite colors to see because they usually are only worn in the summer and can be reminiscent of tranquil beach days. This Fashionista also had on a pale Essie nail polish, Bikini So Teeny. It can be fun to pick out your outfits based on your nail polish color and it definitely makes one look more polished and show how fashion is more than just clothing. Also, jean jackets are often a staple for any Fashionista’s closet especially for cooler summer days. This brings a more casual touch to the look and makes it a more everyday outfit, whereas without it this outfit would be perfect for date night or brunch.

What excited me most about this Fashionista’s outfit was her black loafers. Usually sandals are given the most attention in the summer season, but I think it is important to experiment with a variety of shoes in different styles and colors and for different occasions as well. Loafers are often considered more of a masculine shoe, but I find them to be the perfect addition to this outfit. Loafers have become a more versatile shoe. Originally they were only considered to be for work but they have now become a perfect shoe to wear out on the town as well. This Fashionista told me she had originally gotten these shoes while studying abroad in Italy! However, you do not need to travel aboard to get these shoes. More companies are making these shoes in a variety of colors and styles. I like the more traditional type of loafer this Fashionista went for because it helps break the gender norms of believing that particular fashion choices are only for either males or females.

This Fashionista also paired the loafers with a black flowy skirt which is a perfect choice to stay cool and comfortable in NYC’s summer heat. By matching the loafers and the skirt together this Fashionista accomplished being able to be fluid in her clothing options without being constricted to traditional definitions of certain fashion pieces being strictly feminine or masculine.

How To: You can get this look by purchasing your favorite style of loafers, whether it is traditional or more modern, and pair it with a loose top of your favorite summer colors. For a fun way to make the look pop, paint your nails a similar color as the shirt! Then you can finish off the look with a flowy skirt that you can find anywhere. Forever 21 and Express have a variety of flowy skirts in different styles.

My name is Louise Puma, bust most people call me Weizee. I’m a Public Relations major with a Women’s Studies minor, from SUNY New Paltz. I cannot wait to be able to show off all the summer trends this year, especially because summer is my favorite fashion season! I am ecstatic about having the opportunity to be a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista this semester. I am from Staten Island, New York and my grandmother, who I am named after, was my biggest fashion role model. She was always wearing chunky and loud statement necklaces and earrings, some of which she has passed on to me and I still wear today. I have loved fashion since I was a little girl because it was something that brought me and my grandmother together and gave us something to bond over. Fashion is a form of self-expression, first impressions matter, and fashion is a perfect way of showing people who you are as a person and always has been a way for me to show my confidence. Ralph Lauren once said, “Fashion is about something that comes from within you.” I see fashion as a source of empowerment, especially for women, because there are so many different unique styles we are now able to fully explore and let our personality and character thrive through our fashion. I enjoy wearing bold earrings and statement necklaces, because I see them as a way of showing that I may be small but I can make an impact. Earrings and necklaces are my guilty pleasure because there are so many different styles and they can dress up any outfit. I love to both dress up but also enjoy dressing casual. I think it is important to have a multifaceted fashion sense that shows through no matter what you are wearing. I cannot wait to start this incredible learning experience as a Style Guru and be able to take full advantage of this opportunity. I am excited to explore how others express themselves through their very own and unique fashion sense. Fashion is happening everywhere, and college campuses are one of the best places to see new, innovative and courageous styles, and I cannot wait to show them all off!
