WHAT TO WEAR: Winter

Although I don’t usually comply with the obscure tradition of relying on a groundhog for my weather, I can agree with the rodent that spring is in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, this time of year brings about unpredictable weather that no meteorologist can properly predict. No joke—it was sunny and 60 degrees yesterday and now it’s like I’m living in a snow globe. Because of the drastic change in temperatures, it becomes that much easier to throw in the proverbial towel and just pick out whatever is clean in your closet. As much as it pains me to say this, there have been several mornings when a hoodie or pair of sweatpants were my obvious choice of clothes for the day. So how can we stay fashionable with the unreliable weather forecasts this time of year brings? Transitioning from winter to spring can be tricky to pull off, but this Fashionista shows how its done.

The key to mastering fashion this time of year is choosing flexible pieces to layer. Having basic pieces in your wardrobe that you can add to is a must. As this Fashionista shows, you cannot go wrong with a classic knit sweater and a black mini skirt. She chose a neutral gray knit (I’ll have you know gray IS the new black) that is actually cropped, giving it the option to be styled in a completely different way. In addition to the simplicity of the sweater, the skirt she is wearing is the definition of versatile. A black mini skirt will always be a classic piece that can be styled season to season and year to year.

Now to the most important part: adding layers. Choosing a great jacket to throw over basic pieces can take an outfit from bleak to chic in a matter of seconds. Be sure to pick one that can add a bit of interest, whether it be through print, fabric or stylistic details. This Fashionista opted for a marled longline jacket that gives texture and visual interest. Also keeping her warm from the winter elements, her polka-dotted tights are the epitome of functional and fashionable. Mixing textures and patterns through layered garments is a great way to take your look up a notch. Additionally, this Fashionista paired her outfit with a statement necklace and heeled booties. Her necklace is the cherry on top for this look, adding a touch of class and glamour. On colder winter days, the necklace can easily be swapped out for a thick scarf. Lastly, her booties have been a seasonal favorite by Fashionistas campus-wide. They add a bit of edge to the more classic outfit, making the look head to toe perfection.

Just because the weather seems to be confused doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to be. Knowing how to incorporate the basic pieces of your wardrobe and layering with them will get you through whatever weather comes your way.

One Simple Change: So it’s a bit warmer out? Ditch the tights and opt for a lightweight jacket or blazer. You will look just as chic and still be weather appropriate.
