Outfit Ideas for That Kickback You Were Just Invited To

What to wear to a kickback.

If you’re like me, you like to dress up for every occasion—and that even includes a casual party in a friend’s dorm room. Adding that extra outfit effort, whether by throwing on a statement coat over your favorite tee and jeans, swapping a cool clutch for that bookbag, or adding an eye-catching accessory to an all-back look, makes even the most laid-back gathering a little more memorable in my book. So I turned to my fellow CF community members for a some quick inspo on what to wear to that party you were just invited to after class, plus where to shop their best pieces.

To a Study Date

Comfiness is key when studying, and that applies when you’re gathered together for a group project. To keep things simple but still super stylish, go for a monochrome look. Grab your favorite sweater, slip on culottes, and finish the look in a pair of sneakers in a corresponding hue. An oversize scarf will add a dramatic finish to a cozy getup.

To a Dorm Room Party

This outfit is an easy solution if you’re headed to a kickback right after your last class of the day. If you already have the base of a playful statement top and trousers, slip on a pair of loafers, and swap your backpack for a little clutch or small handbag. You’ll be ready in no time for a low-key gathering with your closest friends.

To a Movie Night

Whether you’re gathered around a laptop computer screen or have the luxury of a TV in your dorm, movie nights are basically the perfect after-class way to unwind. Keep things comfy in an unexpected twist on the classic tee-and-jeans combo with two-tone denim and a teddy coat.

To Watch the Game

Even if you don’t have a hometeam jersey or you’re not a sports fanatic, you can still show your more athletic side with a hooded coat. An all-black outfit is the perfect base for a faux-fur jacket, plus its all-weather ready if you need to take it to the streets after your team won the final match of the season.

To a Girls’ Night In

Sometimes you just need some chill time with your best friends, an event that calls for your most low-pressure outfit. Reach for your favorite vintage tee, distressed denim, and a sherpa coat to make a laid-back look that’s fit for a full-on gossip sesh.

To Brunch at a Friend’s Apartment

Taking a minute to grab coffee friends is the ultimate brain break during a busy semester. This easy outfit feels special thanks to the addition of an eye-catching coat in red tweed. Slip-on loafers are a go-to when you’ve just rolled out of bed but still want to feel like you put together a full outfit.
