STYLE GURU STYLE: When West Meets East

This week, I was inspired by Band of Outsider’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. The brand is West Coast based, but has plans to open a store in SoHo this year. Their runway show debuted outfits proving they were a brand fit for both coasts. The collection focused on simple silhouettes and fun accessories. For my twist on the look, I added some essentials for the unpredictable East Coast weather.

I kept the simple silhouette that was the trademark of the show and added a black belt to highlight the shape of the model. To keep from freezing, I added a pair of sheer black tights and an off-white moto jacket. The tights add a nice contrast to the dress. Tights also often add a finished look to any outfit; rarely do they look out of place. For the next couple of months in the city, it is going to be impossible to step outside without at least one layer on. I would suggest trying a moto jacket like this one. It gives off a grunge look similar to a leather jacket. The white color is also a perfect contrast to the rest of the dark outfit.

In Band of Outsider’s show, gladiator shoes were a hallmark. That is most definitely a West Coast shoe, and if they are seen in New York City, their debut is not made until early May. To substitute, I took out my trusty black booties. I like these booties because they have a fun layered detail on the front similar to the stacking on a gladiator.

Being bicoastal myself, I am always frustrated that I can’t wear things that were part of my daily wardrobe when I lived in California. The same used to happen in reverse. Lucky for me, seeing Band of Outsider’s collection, I have learned that the impossible can be made possible!

Get My Look: 1. Simple silhouette dress. 2. Moto jacket. 3. Black booties.
