STYLE GURU STYLE: Turtleneck Love Club

This season, I found love in a very hopeful place—in the warm embrace of a turtleneck, that is. In this harsh Canadian winter, folks are continually searching for the right garments to keep them warm without compromising their style. I recently stopped my search when I coincidentally came across a boxy beige turtleneck in my mother’s closet and she was kind enough to let me keep it. Neat, androgynous and flattering—just some of the adjectives I’d use to describe this garment. Whether it’s a dickey, in the form of a dress or a basic sweater, the turtleneck is surely a classic. The forecast for fall 2015 suggests that the high-neck knits are in it for the long haul. From Thakoon to Charlotte Ronson, the turtleneck was the principal act in the many lines that showed at the most recent New York Fashion Week. We saw variations and reinventions of the garment styled under V-neck dresses, paired with denim jackets and even adorned in tribal prints.

I followed suit with the NYFW trend and chose to create an outfit with a focus on the turtleneck. This particular look is influenced by the DKNY fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. It is a brand known for catering to the girl-on-the-go, offering pieces that go from day to night. This collection utilized the versatility of the turtleneck to create both sophisticated and smart looks, appropriate for various occasions.

I paired my sweater with a black popper-front boyfriend coat. It’s a simple, straight-cut coat and takes the shape of an oversized blazer, but with the added benefits of a winter coat. This piece is definitely a favourite of mine because of its versatility. I find that I can pair it with a wide scope of looks, from casual to formal.

It only seemed appropriate to complete this simple ensemble with a black high-waist trouser. My overall look is composed of basic cuts and forms, solid colours and minimal adornment. It’s a lightweight outfit that would be suitable for a day on campus or running errands.

Get My Look: 1. A beige boxy turtleneck jumper. 2. A black boyfriend coat. 3. A black high-waisted trouser.
