STYLE GURU STYLE: The Vest of Me

Winter has officially hit us here in Toronto! With stores and retailers already putting out their spring collections, I can’t help but continue to embrace cozy sweaters, boots, scarves and lots and lots of layers! When it comes to fashion trends, I seem to have the most fun with styling fall and winter outfits. I think it’s because of the endless possibilities of layering different pieces together such as scarves, hats, coats, and of course…vests.

Lately I’ve been obsessed with unique vests and over pieces such as this one from H&M. I love the simplicity of layering a vest on top of your outfit to really give it a pop of uniqueness. This vest really caught my eye because of it’s unique print; It definitely has a Balmain feel to it. I’ve taken inspiration from this particular Balmain fall 2012 ready-to-wear collection that features a similar vest in which I decided to translate into a more everyday look for us students.

Because the vest is the main focus of this outfit, I decided to pair it with a plain black turtleneck. I really like the look of a vest paired with a turtleneck top to warm up the outfit and draw the attention further up. Staying true to the runway collection, I’ve added a pair of faux leather leggings, which are much more comfortable than real leather pants! I consider faux leather leggings a wardrobe staple; They can literally go with anything. I really like introducing different textures into my outfits, and these leggings are the perfect way to do so because of their versatile black colour. Sometimes wearing all-black can be too dull, however mixing different textures in the same colour palette creates more dimension to your look.

For my footwear, I’ve added a pair of suede over-the-knee boots, which stays true to the all black colour scheme and adds another source of texture with the suede material. For my accessories, I’ve chosen a structured black bag with gold hardware that really completes the outfit. Lastly, you can’t forget the bling! I’ve finished off this look with a gold jeweled bracelet to add some sparkle and break up all the black. I like how the gold jewels complement the gold hardware on the bag.

Get My Look: 1. Vest. 2. Turtleneck. 3. Faux leather leggings. 4. Over-the-knee boots.
