STYLE GURU STYLE: The Cold Shoulder

Everyone will be giving the cold shoulder this spring. To quote designer Flora Gill, “the shoulder is a part of the body that is universally beautiful.” Shoulder-baring looks dominated the runways this fashion season. In particular, one designer’s take on the trend caught my eye: Proenza Schouler. At Proenza Schouler’s spring ready-to-wear show models sported high necklines with exposed shoulders, also known as “the cold shoulder.” This cutout look is not only a refreshing and inventive spin on the ever popular off the shoulder top, but also totally wearable.

With the weather beginning to transition from winter to spring, I have been looking for ways to transition my wardrobe as well.  It’s not quite time to dig my sundresses and crop tops out of the closet, but I am ready to begin moving away from thick sweaters and lots of layers. This look is the perfect way to show some skin come spring, but not too much. This trend is also extremely versatile; shoulder cutouts can be found everywhere from shirts to dresses to coats.

To steal this look, I chose a thin long sleeve turtleneck shirt with shoulder cutouts. I absolutely love this top because it is a very basic and wearable piece given a fun and unique twist with the shoulder detailing. Since it was a sunny day I coupled it with a simple black corduroy lace-up skirt; the top would look equally cute with a pair of black skinny jeans in colder weather. I finished off my outfit by throwing on my go-to black booties and a wide-brimmed black hat to keep the sun off my face.

Get My Look: 1. A “cold shoulder” top. 2. A black skirt. 3. Black felt hat.
