STYLE GURU STYLE: Supersize Me

In retrospect, it may be Kanye that comes to mind when you consider this season’s New York Fashion Week, but I’m not here to talk about Kanye’s adidas collaboration or North West’s infamous meltdowns. Among the season’s overarching trends were furry oversized outerwear, odes to ‘70s fashion and dark, monochromatic collections. Among my favorite collections was J.Crew, which was a surprise considering my lack of enthusiasm for sparkles and glitter. This season’s collection played with proportions, as models donned colossal coats, giant scarves and voluminous trousers. I don’t anticipate Florida’s winter temperatures dropping anywhere near the arctic levels the Northeast is experiencing, but that doesn’t have to stop you from staying cozy in a cocoon of outerwear.

The runway look that inspired this outfit featured a gigantic royal blue scarf, which I emulated with my own oversized knit scarf from Zara. The model sported a simple striped T-shirt and loose jeans as well as some black and white pointed pumps. I modified the outfit a bit, opting for a slightly ripped pair of jeans and boots that were more appropriate for spring. I matched the ornate embroidery of the model’s scarf with the classic Ralph Lauren logo on the blazer.

J.Crew’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear show stepped up their outerwear and accessory game, showing buyers that style and functionality are not mutually exclusive. This trend towards fluffy outerwear just might be the perfect solution for those of you wish it was socially acceptable to snuggle in a blanket during class.

Get My Look: 1. An oversized scarf. 2. A loose pair of jeans. 3. A pair of pointed shoes.
