STYLE GURU STYLE: Reinventing the Classics

Living in a small dorm with (extremely) limited closet space makes it difficult to keep a variety of trendy clothes ready to wear. That is why I love investing in classic, timeless pieces that I can mix and match. While I will always love creating outfits that incorporate the latest trends, there is no denying the comfort of throwing on a trusted staple piece. The best part about classic pieces is that they can be worn over and over again and look different every time depending on how you style and accessorize them; with good basics, you will have endless outfit options.

In the above look, I started with my trusted leather jacket. This simple, leather moto jacket makes any look instantly chic and can be worn with anything from denim to dresses to joggers, making it an item I couldn’t live without. Underneath the jacket, I wore a plain black V-neck loose T-shirt. Like the leather jacket, this T-shirt is so easy to throw on with almost any bottoms and can be easily dressed up or down with accessories. The last staple piece of this look are the all-white Adidas sneakers which are both comfortable and versatile. These sneakers are definitely a go-to pair of shoes for the spring, though they are easy to wear all year round due to their neutral coloring and stylish design.

Frayed hem jeans are one of this season’s trendiest items, complementing the simplicity of the rest of this look. These ripped and frayed jeans draw a lot of attention, so I recommend pairing them with a simple shirt in a solid color, as shown above. To spice up this fairly neutral-colored outfit, I added a bright silk neckerchief. This is a great accessory to invest in as it can be worn around the neck or even tied to a purse to give any outfit a pop of color! I love the chic element that this scarf adds to the outfit, making it cohesive and balanced.

Like anything in life, I believe that balance in outfits is key. In pairing classic, timeless pieces with trendier items, I can create an outfit that is chic and unique. I love experimenting with ways to bring new life into basic pieces, like adding a pop of color to a black leather jacket with a bright silk scarf. No matter what trends come and go, your basics will always be in style so don’t be afraid to invest in good quality and be a (gasp) outfit repeater!
