STYLE GURU STYLE: Pretty Meets Punk

We all have our signature styles. You know those garments that pull you in every time you go shopping? Well I tend to gravitate toward outfits that are pink, silky and floral; in one word: girly. That’s why I was rather taken by the idea of throwing in one piece that gives your outfit some unexpected kick.

Calling all Fashionistas. Add some edge. Live a little.

In Louis Vuitton’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection, head designer, Nicolas Ghesquiére, combines the feminine with the punk aesthetic. Various looks featured leather moto jackets paired with flirty skirts; the type of contrast that makes heads turn. We’re talking Blair Waldorf meets Keith Richards. I decided to use the items I already had in my closet to throw together my own version of a girly look with a twist.

I chose this unique green leather jacket to add a pop of color, not to mention spunk, to the ensemble. The silhouette and metal findings made it just rocker enough to add contrast to the feminine pieces. Next, I selected this A-line black suede skirt from Abercrombie & Fitch as the perfect piece to anchor the outfit. It was a popular item this fall, showing up in every fabric from suede to denim to corduroy. By adding some sheer tights, the skirt can easily be worn into the colder months. Tights are a Fashionista’s best friend for winter style! I tucked in a patterned top in deep blues and greens to give the outfit a rich color scheme. Heeled booties are a winter staple in my closet, and I wear them with everything from jeans to dresses for a city-chic feel. You can’t go wrong with a pair in black leather.

As for accessories, I chose an oversized jade ring to tie into the color palette. Rings are my go-to accessory of the moment plus they motivate me to keep my nails looking nice. To top the look off, I threw my essentials into a cross-body black leather satchel. This little bag is ideal for walking around campus since it matches practically everything and adds a sleek touch to any look. What’s not to like?

If you’re looking for an alternative to wearing jeans and a sweater this winter, take a cue from Nicolas Ghesquiére and pair a flirty skirt with a tough, leather jacket. The man knows what he’s talking about: it’s fun to add a hint of rock n’ roll to an otherwise girly outfit.
