STYLE GURU STYLE: On Wednesdays, We Wear Black

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia happened in April, and though amazing trends were seen on the runway, I was more interested in what was happening off the runway. Photographer Tommy Ton captured some of the best styles worn by fashion show goers and shared his photographs on Style.com. His pictures are where my main focus lies for this article.

Inspired by Australia’s beach and glam life, my look was inspired by that of a woman captured by Tommy Ton. Most of Australian street style is edgy and vibrant, but upon the kaleidoscope of colors lies a few rare people standing out, or should I say blacking out in elegance. Caught on camera was a woman who wore a black slip dress. Her fashion choices were similar to those seen on the runway by designer Vera Wang. She was wearing black on black, and looked like she could be the one on the runway for Wang herself.

Instead of completely stealing this woman’s look and that of Vera Wang’s spring ready-to- wear collection, I made the black my own. Instead of a dress, I chose a black romper. I paired my romper with turquoise accessories, including a statement necklace and a bracelet. I dressed the look up by wearing a pair of nude wedge sandals. I topped it off with a black fedora hat, mocking that of Pharrell Williams. The hat added mystery and conquered my chic goal of standing out. Black is back.
