STYLE GURU STYLE: Make a Statement (Jacket)

If there’s one thing to keep in mind during the cold winter months, it’s that you should never sacrifice your personal style just to dress for the weather. It’s so incredibly easy to dress as you please, even when it’s 10 degrees below zero. Just kidding, that’s a complete and total lie; I would absolutely advise you to never leave your house if it gets that cold where you live, but I think you get what I’m saying.

It’s so simple to find pieces that keep you bundled up but looking fresh, even in the coldest and darkest of months, and we can thank the amazing trends this season for that. It’s no secret that statement jackets are taking over this season. Chanel‘s ready to wear collection proves that with vibrantly textured and colored coats and jackets paired with equally outstanding ensembles. With that in mind, sporting a faux shearling and suede jacket will not only keep you warm, but will also keep you looking stylish all winter long. I wore mine over a gray set, made up of a drop-waist pleated skirt and a cropped sweater. Pleats have been around for a while, but they’re transitioning from the original chiffon midi to a new, heavy fabric mini that’s perfect for any girl wanting to show some leg, even if it’s a bit chilly. Don’t worry though—pleats are here to stay (according to Vogue and Chanel).

Accessories are a winter must-have. While they are mainly to keep yourself nice and cozy, they don’t have to be strictly functional; they can also be FUNctional (sorry for the horrible pun). Beanies are a staple in every wardrobe; they keep you warm while simultaneously making you look absolutely adorable. I wear mine everyday and it doesn’t even mess up my hair, which is miraculous.

Another accessory that is sweeping the nation are the faux fur pom poms that attach to your purse, bag, backpack or anything else you can think of. Fendi introduced these to add a sense of youth to their brand, and stores from Forever 21 to Givenchy quickly adopted them. I’m completely obsessed with my pom pom; it’s such a fun way to liven up a plain black bag and draw attention to a piece that could easily be lost amongst the rest of the outfit. Throw on your favorite pair of black booties and you are good to go.
