STYLE GURU STYLE: Keep Calm And Cape On

Capes are having a moment in ready-to-wear apparel, and I could not be happier. Unlike the boxy silhouette that dominated last winter, capes are reemerging in lighter, sheer designs. Though you might be hesitant to wear one in fear of resembling Maleficent, designers and stylists prove they can be ultra fashion-forward. As seen in Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, capes add elegance to simple garments. You could even say they make a (superhero powered) knockout as the centerpiece of most of the looks.

Serafini’s free flowing designs, alongside Solange Knowles’ wedding gown, honed in my desire to add a cape-based garment to my wardrobe. But I wanted something that wouldn’t drag around and ask to get stepped on in public. Behold the cultivation of Sophia Amoruso and the NASTY GAL team—an ivory caped blouse. As the cape hits a little below my rested fingertips, I’m always in reach of my cape in case it gets a little windy (or if trouble calls). As the blouse is a muscle tank top in disguise, it’s particularly perfect for sporting day to night during summer. Plus, unlike a caped dress, I can pair this top with a textured pencil skirt or wide-leg trousers for a day at work.

To draw attention toward the cape, I chose to accessorize minimally with classic aviators and thin stranded necklaces. You’ll never catch me without at least one necklace on, as they’re truly on my fashion team. My other sidekicks are my chunky heels, as they’re my go-to kicks.

Get My Look: 1. A cape top. 2. Textured pencil skirt. 3. Chunky strap heels.
