STYLE GURU STYLE: From Surreal to Real

Surreal means having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream; unreal; fantastic. This word perfectly describes the winter that we have had so far across the United States. Fifty to 70-degree weather in the East Coast and Midwest in December? I would say this is absolutely surreal. As fas as fashion goes, my favorite collection painted by the surreal is the Gucci spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection.

I love to buy pieces that aren’t necessarily something that everyone else is shopping for at the moment.  This habit unintentionally keeps me a little bit early on trends that I end up spotting on the runway.  In the case of this ensemble, I’m a year ahead because I found this patterned blazer in spring 2015. I admire the bright, decorated suit in look 14. A woman in a pantsuit should make a bold statement.  By pairing the blazer with a ribbed crop top and black denim, I was able to integrate it into my simple everyday style.

Platforms are my go-to shoe for dressing up an outfit while still keeping it as effortless as possible.  They are extremely comfortable and perfect for a day or night look.  My platforms come in handy when I might have to do a lot of walking or standing and still want to have a heel. I like to also keep my accessories to a minimum.  As you can see, I only have on rings and earrings, no necklace. My smaller ring was a gift and the other came from my monthly Ujamaa Box subscription. Instead of carrying a heavy bag, I chose my favorite black clutch from Topshop. Natural makeup and a nude lip help keep the focus on my jacket. My halo, braided with braiding hair, is the icing on top of the cake (or my head).

Get my look: 1. Try a new hairstyle that you haven’t had before. 2.  A patterned blazer or suit. 3. Solid crop top. 4. Simple, complementary accessories. 5. Platform shoes.
