STYLE GURU BIO: Valerie Smith

Hi Fashionistas! My name is Valerie Jana Smith, and I’m from Westchester, New York. This spring, I will be a second semester sophomore at State University of New York at Plattsburgh. I am double majoring in public relations and hotel, restaurant and tourism management with a minor in business. This spring, I will be writing to you from school, a little ways from my hometown as well as New York City.

My style is one and the same of girly and simple. For instance, my favorite go-to outfit revolves around wearing a gray T-shirt. It’s best to focus on making layers because it’s more appealing to the eye. In this outfit, I’m sporting heeled shoes to give me height and aviator sunglasses to give me shade. They go well with my hooded plaid poncho, black corduroys, a high-low white tank top and a floppy brim fedora. Going out of your comfort zone and trying new things is an experience that is always encouraged. Why not try this same approach when facing your closet?

Being a Style Guru is a very rewarding role because I really care about students’ confidence. If girls have true inner confidence, they do a good job at hiding it. Confidence has taken a new meaning that is synonymous with the classic line from Mean Girls, “So you think you’re really pretty?” but it shouldn’t be! People should encourage others to feel good about themselves. Taking pictures and writing columns on students is a short amount of time to appreciate on-campus style, but it means a lot. It shines a light and gives good attention to people who are looking for it…and that is not a bad thing! I am given a power to let girls have seconds worth of fame when my article goes live, which is why I love being apart of CollegeFashionista.
