STYLE GURU BIO: Caroline Smyth

Hey Fashionistas/os! My name is Caroline Smyth and I am currently a sophomore at Binghamton University, majoring in English rhetoric and nursing. I am beyond psyched to be starting my experience with CollegeFashionista as a spring Style Guru Intern!

For as long as I can remember, I have been captivated by fashion. Growing up in the suburbs surrounding New York City, I always made sure to be on top of the trends and watching Project Runway was my favorite show. Even as a preschooler with bangs and a Hello Kitty backpack, I had a method for picking out the perfect ensemble. I soaked in images from my mother’s Glamour subscriptions, the mannequins in Nordstrom and those coveted evenings when an award show would be on. I would ogle at the gowns that celebrities wore on the red carpet. Personally, it was not the celebrities that mattered, but the intricate dresses that draped over them that did. I eagerly anticipated grand ball gowns billowing with tulle, diamond encrusted bodices and dramatic satin mermaids. I formed an insatiable curiosity for the art that fashion was. I wanted to know how designers could transport their ideas to the runway and how I could do the same.

From sewing outfits for my Barbie dolls and shopping at Limited Too to reading any fashion publication I could get my hands on, my love for fashion has never faltered. I love how fashion is unpredictable. Although many designers seem to produce a certain type of look, they always find a way to shock us with their latest collections. For instance, Elie Saab crafts gowns with glistening silhouettes and a classic elegance that gives anyone wearing them an endearing glow. Nonetheless, I am always in awe by every new gown he creates and his specific attention to detail. Luckily, my dream came true because I now work for a custom design wedding salon in my neighborhood where I create my own designs and see them worn down a very special aisle.

My own style is preppy, feminine and chic. Some of my favorite style icons include Audrey Hepburn, Blake Lively, Olivia Palermo, Victoria Beckham and of course the lovely Princess Kate Middleton. I am really enjoying the current kimono trend and love dressing up the look with cute accessories. For this particular look, I added my Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 and my Michael Kors watch with my favorite Steve Madden sneakers.

I am so thankful for this internship at CollegeFashionista because I know it is a step in the right direction. I have always enjoyed writing and I dream of one day finally attending the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week and helping with the September issue at Vogue. I know that there is still so much I have to learn as an aspiring Fashionista, but I hope my experiences as a college student and now, as a Style Guru, will help my dreams become a reality. Thank you for reading my bio! I hope you will enjoy fashion and wear whatever makes you feel confident and beautiful.
