STYLE GURU BIO: Cara Vedral

Hello Fashionistas and Fashionistos! My name is Cara Vedral and I am currently a freshman at Temple University in the city of brotherly love. I am beyond excited to start my start first semester working with CollegeFashionista and grow as a lover of all things trendy with my fellow Fashionistas/os!

Fashion has been intriguing to me my entire life. Both my mother and grandmother worked in the garment industry in New York City for most of their lives- basically living out my dream. Seeing my grandma hemming the dresses of models like Janice Dickenson in an old issue of Vogue made me feel like I was staring at a celebrity. I had always wanted to pursue a career in fashion but was terrified I would never be a good enough designer or that I wouldn’t have the ability to put together an ensemble as well as the next person. That is until recently.

It took years but I have finally come to the (seemingly obvious) realization: there is no definition for the word “fashion!” I don’t know a single person, female or male, who has gone shopping with a friend and picked out an article of clothing they just need in their closet, only to hear their shopping partner say, “Eh, I don’t like it.” And that’s okay! How boring would the world be if everyone wore the same outfits and no one questioned each other’s fashion choices? There would be no creativity and no new trends- not even bringing back old trends (high-waisted everything, hello!).

No words standout to me when trying to describe my style, though I am fond of the quotation, “I’ll stop wearing black when they invent a darker color.” Something about an all-black outfit looks effortlessly cool, timeless and chic. Other times, I’ll throw on a floral scarf, skater skirt and fitted utility jacket, and I’m ready to take on the day. Fashion is an ever-changing wonder.

Advice from myself to myself, my fellow style gurus and anyone reading this: do not let clothes scare you! Dare to be bold and try new things. I’m hoping this experience with CollegeFashionista will help me break out of my comfort zone even more. Throughout these upcoming months, I will be on the lookout for Fashionistas and Fashionistos on my campus. I’m looking forward to meeting my stylish classmates and broadening my knowledge as an aspiring Fashionista!
