STYLE GURU BIO: Ashlynn Thompson

A passionate student and fashion aficionado doing it all in high heels. Hey all you sophisticated sisters, my name is Ashlynn Thompson, and I’m a freshman fashion merchandising major at Kent State University.  In addition to perusing fashion forecasting websites and watching particularly fashionable celebrities on the red carpet, I also love watching Academy Award films from 1928 to the present and viewing the costume design in those films. These movies give an insight into historical fashion and how those silhouettes, trends, and styles have endured and influenced today’s fashion.

I would categorize my street style as chic city girl meets classic elegance. Let me break that down for all you potential Fashionistas who don’t live and breathe Vogue. The chic woman is very of-the-moment with her apparel and accessories. Her wardrobe consists of mostly black and neutral tones, but she incorporates bold pops of color, as well as sleek and sharp lines that grab the attention of passersby. The classic lady chooses pieces that will stay in style forever, she never over-accessorizes, and she never plays it safe. I admit I’m not adventurous in my style, (it’s called the comfort zone for a reason, right?), but I make sure to have some aspect of my outfit—whether it be a necklace, heels, or interesting clothing design—that makes a statement. Why call myself a Style Guru if I don’t make a statement?

Now for the look you see in the pictures. This outfit leans more toward chic with the color-blocked duster and laser-cut tote bag all in neutral hues. The classic style comes into play with the white crop top and high-waisted jeans that are basic enough not to overpower the cardigan. The statement piece in this ensemble is the gold flower crystal necklace because, while it may not be the first thing your eye goes to, it leaves a lasting impression.  I chose this necklace and gold rhinestone bow ring to go with the black booties with gold accents to bring cohesiveness to the look.  Matching my accessories with my outfit is a little detail only I usually notice, but it’s worth it!

I’ll leave you with style advice to take away from this bio that every young woman must know: Never over-accessorize. Always make a statement.
