STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Retro Revival

July 23rd, 2015 at 2:00am

Fashion, I believe, is an art form, a type of personal expression utilizing many different techniques and trends. I think one of the greatest aspects of fashion is that certain pieces and trends never truly go out of style; they just resurface years later in a new form, a fashion reincarnation of sorts. This reincarnation gives us a little history lesson, too. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve worn something that I thought was a more recent fashion trend and my mom, reminiscing on her younger years, has said, “Oh, I remember when (insert trend here) first became popular!”

That’s the best part, really, getting a glimpse into the world of fashion from long ago. And each new generation gets the opportunity to revive those old trends, bringing them into the modern fashion sphere with new twists. Who knows, maybe one day, far far into the future, those stretchy, silky popcorn tops will make a comeback and somebody may actually wear them right. Hey, stranger things have happened.

This Fashionista revived not one but two retro styles in her simple, daytime look while adding her personal fashion flair. If a ’50s circle skirt and a ’70s denim skirt had a baby, this adorable American Apparel skirt would be it. It’s the perfect combination of two fabulous, aged trends that have made their way back to the forefront of fashion. The circle skirt has a sort of flirty and girly silhouette that looks great on anyone, and you could rock this denim version in a daytime or nighttime look.

Keeping the rest of her look simple allowed this Fashionista to make the denim skirt really stand out. She paired it with a white tank top with distressed details that give this ensemble a modern, edgy feel. These nude Steve Madden sandals add some interesting detail to this look still without stealing the spotlight from the denim skirt. A comfortable pair of nude-colored sandals is a summer necessity; they’re great for strolling through the city any day and create the illusion of longer legs when they are similar to your skin tone. Adding pops of color is a good trick for any outfit, especially in the summer, so look for little opportunities to do so! Wanting a little more color besides her neon nail polish, this Fashionista accessorized her look with a leather Clare V messenger bag, a practical and stylish piece that is great for any Fashionista.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Denim skirts are really making a comeback. They’re super versatile, so you can try wearing them with a simple white T-shirt or even dress them up with a nice sweater or blouse!”
