STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Getting Down to Business

January 13th, 2017 at 2:00am

It is the new year and the time to trade out last year’s shell and put on a new face. Out with the old and in with the new. Everyone is search for the “it factor” and searching for ways to learn from last year’s lessons.

For the college students, it is also time to start searching for jobs and summer internships. This means polishing up the resume and preparing the elevator pitch. All the skills and lessons learned from previous experiences culminates to whether it fits what the hiring manager is seeking. This is a prime example of important lessons the past can bring. Prior experiences,  professional or personal, provide an opportunity to grow and learn new skills to apply during future challenges.

In the business school, they teach us that there are no second chances at a first impression. That being said, when seeking success, one should dress the part. The fashion of business has its own set of rules; some would include open toed shoes are never acceptable (especially flip-flops), skirts should have a minimal length of right above the knee and it is important to understand the difference between business professional and business casual. Despite the rules, there is definitely room for creativity. Some of my favorite professional looks are a creative twist to the traditional pant suit.

In this look, there are the elements of a traditional business look. The classic, white, button down and and black trousers are essential business staples. I decided to take some inspiration from one of my favorite designers, Victoria Beckham. She has worn looks with the white button down and black trousers and paired it with pointy heels and a statement outerwear piece. I chose the maroon coat because the structure of the garment is reminiscent of a blazer. It is the twist in the traditional pant suit look. The gold zippers are a modern touch and give way to nice, roomy, pockets. For accessories, I wore some rings and a watch. In business, punctuality is essential and the watch is a fashionable way to tell time in order to avoid being fashionably late.

The new year is exciting and I am looking forward to all the opportunities it brings. Dressing for success is not limited to the outfit of the day, but taking advantage of the opportunities that cross your path. It is time to get down to business and that means it is time to make something old into something new.
