STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Feminine Flannel

February 25th, 2015 at 2:00am

There’s no doubt that we all love the comfy, oversized feel of some of the more “boyish” styles; crewneck sweatshirts, knit sweaters and the ever so popular flannels are slowly making their way into many Fashionistas’ closets, whether they bought it themselves or they borrowed it from their guy. Bold, monochromatic or even the occasional vibrant colored flannels are something everyone seems to be giving a try. They are no longer just for the farm boys or something you’d automatically associate with any man over the age of 60.

It’s nice to be able to grab something other than a cardigan or a frumpy sweater to cover up and stay warm in during the chilly winter; sometimes a blazer or a jacket just doesn’t do the trick. It’s been a common theme for girls to take a more masculine piece and add their own flare to it, taking it from a once tomboy look to something much more flattering. It’s not to say that no girl ever wore a flannel before, but that print and the garment itself is becoming very popular amongst the college crowd. Easy enough to dress up a bit or just layer on its own, both guys and gals are making it a staple in their wardrobe.

This week’s Fashionista has taken an ordinary, button-down flannel and given it a girly touch by adding a few of her favorites. She started by picking a very basic print that is not too bold and one that allows her to mix and match, or emphasize one color from the piece very easily. Keeping it fairly basic on the bottom with black boots and leggings, she added a little sparkle by with a brown and gold Michael Kors watch and simple, one strap leather bracelet. Going for a more minimal look on the jewelry and wearing only simple studs, she added a really bold touch with a bright, cherry colored lip, helping pull out the small amounts of red that are within her flannel.

We all have those days when we just want to embrace the comfort and throw the heels back on the shelf. There’s no better way to do just that other than picking one of your staples and adding a few personal touches to take it up a notch.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Take a simple and comfortable piece you love and add on the extras in other areas beside your clothes. Adding a bold lip or a chunky necklace makes you feel a little more put together and you’re good to go for the day.”
