STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Denim for Days

Denim on denim is making a major comeback this season in both street style and on the runway, and no, we don’t mean the Canadian tuxedo your grandpa used to wear in the ’80s. It has become a staple in any wardrobe, ranging from denim jeans and denim jackets to denim shirts and even denim accessories. Not only is the material classic and easy to pair with anything, its versatility makes it perfect for layering during the cold winter months. Mixing different patterns, washes and textures can transform denim for any style and can make a basic outfit look chic, grunge, boho or retro.

While denim on denim can be a tricky trend to pull off, it is totally doable with the right layers. Pairing your denim with a patterned top underneath can break up the bulky material and even add a pop of color. This Fashionista paired her light wash denim jacket and light wash jeans with a brightly colored flannel and a crop top to even out the simple color scheme in her look. Pairing a simple denim jacket with distressed boyfriend jeans also helped create texture.

When pairing denim with denim without a pattern to separate them, it can be easy to look like you’re wearing a denim jumpsuit (think Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears circa 2001). However, you can make denim on denim work by pairing light wash with dark wash denim. The contrast in the colors will separate the two pieces and allow you to utilize the classic denim pieces in your wardrobe for layering and warmth during the winter.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Keep it fun. Wear a crop top in the middle of winter, take risks and enjoy the art of dressing. Be open to mixing pieces. Don’t be afraid to dress ’70s one day, preppy the next, street or sporty. Fashion is so fun to play with; confining to one style is missing an opportunity to experiment.”
