STREET STYLE VS DECOR: Velvet

The temperatures have dropped, the layers have piled on and all you want to do is snuggle up in something warm (perhaps with someone warm as well?). Whether you are braving the brutal cold or settling in for an evening in your apartment watching Netflix, the same luxe fabric will be your best friend this winter—velvet.

Wearing velvet adds an instant infusion of elegance to a look. The key is not to do head-to-toe velvet (cue to photos of me in my dance recital costume at age seven). To keep the look as sophisticated as the fabric itself, pick one standout piece and build your outfit around that item. This Fashionista’s blazer is a great example. The structured silhouette is strong on it’s own. The beautiful velvet only further enhances the garment. She kept the rest of the look rather simple by sporting a neutral top and pants.

The same could be said for infusing velvet into your dorm or apartment decor. Find a velvet piece that speaks to you and let it be the focal point. The easiest way to do this is through pillows. Find velvet pillows in a rich, deep hue to really bring out the luxurious quality of the fabric. Let the pillows be the unifying element for the rest of the things in your apartment, such as your art, coffee table and rug.

Here are some pillows and other velvet household items that will help you bring this fabric from your closet to your living space:

1. A velvet studded pillow. Love the navy!

2. Velvet cube seating. Your guests will approve.

3. Reversible faux fur and velvet throw; truly the best of both worlds!

4. Velvet statement chair that is sure to make, well, a statement.
