STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Coated With Embellishments

As we advance further into the winter season each week, it only seems as if days get darker and colder. Us students in the northeast are less concerned with looking good for class, and more concerned with bundling up in all-black to count the hours down until we are back in bed again. With this type of attitude, it’s extremely helpful to have pieces of clothing that are made fabulously so we don’t have to worry about actually being fabulous. On what was arguably the coldest morning in Philadelphia to date, I met a Fashionista with an eye-catching piece of outerwear—a coat that was coated with embellishments.

This Fashionista wore a black parka from Free People that was detailed with metallic embellishments and studs on the sleeves. Up until the moment I saw her, I had never seen a coat designed like this. Long puffer coats and solid parkas are the trends I’ve been seeing the most this season, so it was refreshing to notice something different. With one simple statement piece, this Fashionista was able to show off her boho-chic, trendsetting sense of style.

Another thing I really love about this style of coat is that it can also be imitated with a DIY project. You can improve a plain parka by purchasing some embellishments and sewing them on yourself. It’s an awesome way to show off your creativity and update a staple piece you may already have in your wardrobe.

A coat with golden embellishments similar to this one can easily complement a pair of black jeans and boots with gold hardware. To add some color to this rather dark outfit, take note of what this Fashionista did and wear a pastel scarf. Scarves are perfect for both warmth and an accent piece.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Find a coat with embellishments or some type of unique detailing. Now is the perfect time to shop for outerwear because a lot of items are on sale! If you’re feeling creative, take a trip to the arts and crafts store this weekend and embellish a plain coat on your own.”
