STYLE GURU BIO: Alexis Monroy

Greetings Fashionistas and Fashionistos!  My name is Alexis Monroy and I am a student at Western Illinois University. I am studying Fashion Merchandising and I am very eager to start my first semester with CollegeFashionista.

Since I can remember, I have always had an appreciation for the arts and fashion. I have currently found an obsession that I am very passionate about. It all started with an old sewing machine from a local garage sale my mother purchased. Little did my mother know I had been working for the theater costume shop at my school. When I found out what my mother had purchased, I just had to take it from her. During the time I worked for the costume shop, I learned many things like sewing on a button, hemming a skirt and even the basics of using a sewing machine. It was a little terrifying at first, but I seemed to catch on very quickly. When I am not working on garments, my mind swells from thinking of what to design next. I sleep, think and dream fashion.

I would describe my style as very versatile. As style changes from day to day, mine changes as well. My fashion inspiration is Miroslava Duma. Her risk-taking aesthetic has encouraged me to be more myself in the fashion I wear. Lately I have been obsessing over box-shaped shirts and skirts in general. In this outfit, I am wearing a navy blue box-shaped shirt with an embellished touch. I paired this with a simple black skirt and black booties. I accessorized this look with a gold watch, a cross-body Coach purse and a wine-colored hat to finish this look. For when the air is chillier, you can always throw on a fashionable jacket to match the outfit.

I am ecstatic to capture and meet many of the Fashionistas on my campus. I will be posting every Monday!
