STYLE GURU BIO: Nicole Odziewa

Welcome all of you Fashionistas and Fashionistos! It’s Nicole here, currently living in the best city in the world. What city is that you might ask? Chicago, of course. I am a sophomore at DePaul University, majoring in public relations. This is my first semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. It took me a while to build up the courage to apply, but I am finally here and couldn’t be more excited!

Fashion is something that I’ve been interested in for a while; the size of my closet can speak to that. Besides fashion, music has been a passion of mine since I got introduced to Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys at the tender age of four. The worlds of music and fashion collide all the time, and I’d credit music for playing an influential role in my style evolution. I can always count on finding inspiration, whether it be in my favorite music artists’ style or a strangers’ outfit that I spotted at a concert.

I may have only moved 45 minutes away from home for college, but for those of you that live in the suburbs of Illinois, then you know that Chicago is a completely different world. After my first year at DePaul, I noticed the difference in style in the suburbs versus the city which called for a change in my own style. I left my era of florals and bright colors behind, and found myself shifting towards darker tones. Black has recently become a close friend of mine, but don’t worry I haven’t completely forgotten about the world of patterns and colors.

Dressing for winter can be hard especially when you live in a city like Chicago. The weather can be unpredictable; one day it will be 30 degrees and the next day it’s 60 degrees. I wish I could say that was just me exaggerating, but sadly it isn’t. During the winter, I always struggle with trying to look stylish while also staying warm. The longline coat has been my go-to this winter season; it can instantly transform an outfit and make it look chic. For a long time, I avoided turtlenecks because it brought back childhood nightmares of my mom making me wear them all winter long. Turtlenecks are back though, and they’ve recently become a staple piece in my closet. Speaking of staple pieces, ankle booties are always my go-to. You can never go wrong with a pair of ankle booties no matter what season it is.

One thing I’m sure of, there is no lack of great outfits on DePaul’s campus. I can’t wait to start sharing looks that inspire me, and hopefully spark some inspiration in you. For now, I leave you with a bit of wisdom. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to fashion, so never be afraid to be a little bold and daring. After all that’s what fashion is all about, isn’t it?
