STYLE GURU STYLE: Don’t Fear Sheer

Tom Ford is always pushing boundaries with his designs, and his spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection doesn’t disappoint. His looks are known for their mix of sensuality and elegance and that is exactly the aesthetic portrayed in his spring show. I fell in love with his daring, sheer dresses sprinkled with beautiful embellishments, his metallic mini dresses worn with tights and sky-high platforms and his striking patterned pants. Ford’s collection is perfect for girls trying to stand out and break some rules.

While I admire the confidence of anyone who could rock a fully sheer dress or shirt, the look is a bit much for most people. To recreate the same style, but in a day-time appropriate way, I simply added a delicate lace bralette underneath. The bralette still allows the beading and sequins on my dress to stand out, but keeps me covered. If a dress is sheer all over or a bralette feels too bare, you can also wear a bodysuit or slip.

One of the standout looks in Ford’s show was a fringed leather jacket and skirt combo. I wrote about fringe last week and couldn’t resist showing another example of how it can be worn. My fringed leather coat can be thrown over anything for an instant cool, edgy vibe and is perfect for the mild New Orleans winter. A leather jacket can help transition a summery dress into a fall or winter look.

The styling in the show added an extra edge to the outfits that I wanted to replicate in my look. I wore sheer black tights like Ford’s models, another great way to make a light dress appropriate for cold weather. I loved the thick platform heels worn in the show, but unfortunately was not blessed with the ability to walk in shoes that high. Instead, I wore black booties that are more realistic for class or dinner with friends. I also added gold hoops because I can’t go out without jewelry.

Get My Look: 1. Sheer beaded dress. 2. Lace bralette. 3. Leather jacket.
