STYLE GURU BIO: Blair Gilkyson

Hello there, Fashionistas! I’m Blair Gilkyson writing to you from the corn-filled state of Nebraska, home of the Huskers. I am a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln studying Fashion Merchandising and Business. My heart is happy with the opportunity to show what Midwestern style has to offer. I am excited to combine my fascination of people-watching and my love for finding new trends to keep you guys in the know with what’s happening on my campus.

I found a love for fashion at a young age. My two older sisters thought I was their Barbie doll growing up and constantly dressed me in anything from their dance tutus to an all leather, biker-kid ensemble. Though I may have accumulated some stares back then, I am grateful I was instilled with the notion of originality early on.

I was also raised as a frugal shopper so I live for bargains. The hunt to find that perfect piece at the lowest price is what I love. Additionally, I have a passion for utilizing staple pieces in every way possible. Being innovative when putting outfits together may take longer in the morning but it’s a great creative outlet.

My personal style changes more than Kylie Jenner’s hair color. I love pushing norms and wearing the unexpected. I am most comfortable in an oversized flannel and a ripped pair of jeans—known as my “homeless chic” look to my friends. I love getting inspiration from scrolling through Pinterest, flipping the pages of Vogue or stalking the many fashion bloggers I adore.

This post caught me on a day full of running errands around town so my outfit is comfortable and practical. I have been obsessed with wearing my adidas sneakers with everything. They fill me with nostalgia because I had a pair with orange stripes as a kid. I am also wearing my favorite vintage jean jacket, a hand-me-down from my mom who wore it in the ‘90s. Free favorites are the best! You can find a similar one here. And to top off my “cool girl” outfit: a pair of camo skinnies that can make any outfit look bad a** without trying too hard.

I’m so excited to share a little piece of UNL with you guys this semester. I hope you enjoy reading my perspective on fashion and get inspired by the cool cats walking the streets of Lincoln.
