STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pattern Palooza

Alexander McQueen once said, “It’s a new era in fashion—there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high end, low end, classic labels and up-and-coming designers all together.”

There once was a day where mixing patterns was a very scary thing, and every Fashionista/o strayed away from the horrid idea. However, in today’s fashion world, I find myself and other Fashionistas/os becoming bolder with outfit decisions. As Alexander McQueen said, there are no longer any rules when it comes to fashion. People are mixing black and brown, mixing silver and gold accessories, wearing white after Labor Day and one of my favorites, mixing patterns. That’s why this Fashionista immediately caught my eye.

I spotted this Fashionista in class sporting one of my favorite trends that I never seem to pull off quite right. I am always trying to mix prints together and almost always fail miserably. Though it is subtle, this Fashionista mixed floral and polka-dots perfectly. The trend worked so great for her with the focus being a maroon dress with black polka-dots. You are then immediately drawn to her floral tights that are the reverse colors. The tights are mainly black with some scattered maroon flowers. The way the colors are reversed help these prints play off of each other and really work together.

To make it fit for the chilly winter weather, she paired black booties with the dress, giving it a more casual and edgy look. To complete the outfit, she adds a warm oversized jacket, which also keeps the patterns from being too busy. It’s the perfect outfit for any fashion rebel that is trying to break the old rules!

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK?: “Be fearless. Try new things, and wear items or prints together that you never would have thought about wearing. It will develop your own unique style, and you’ll be surprised with the outcome!”
