STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Blues

Style Advice of the Week

Out with the old and in with the new. Ladies and gents, it’s time to say goodbye to 2012 and hello to 2013. With the New Year comes the anticipated new year’s resolution. Resolving to hit the gym on a daily basis might be a bit of a battle, especially after all those holiday cookies we indulged. But hold on, there’s a more likely, enticing resolution option. All you have to do to achieve this resolution is simply vow to set aside those cozy sweats and reserve them for at home use only. With those out of the way, play dress up with the publicly acceptable clothes you already have or want to have with that holiday gift money you may have gotten. We can all dress like the Fashionistas/os we were destined to be. Versatility is key to build a new year’s wardrobe to flaunt your fashionable self and to do just that, enter the chiffon blouse.

The bland starched blouse has run its course much like 2012. Instead, the flattering chiffon blouse has taken its place. This top is no longer reserved strictly for the stuffy workplace. For example, take this Fashionista who chose to pair hers with a classic pair of dark wash jeans. Drawing inspiration from the golden buttons on the pockets, she opted for gold jewelry for a hint of sparkle. Though the new year celebrations are over and your glitzy attire may reside in the bottom of your laundry basket, don’t forget it can make its toned-down appearance throughout the year. This Fashionista proved her glittering necklace is perfect to jazz up her blouse and jeans.

Take your pick, the basic blouse can be found in any color and style. For the more adventurous of Fashionistas, try an embellished collar or an edgy cutout version of this blouse. Aside from jeans, it can be paired with a patterned skirt for day or night. If your fancy new top is patterned have no fear, it’s perfectly acceptable, in fact encouraged, to mix prints. The key is to keep the two prints within similar color tones. Stripes and polka-dots you say? Of course they’re acceptable to wear together. Also, the blouse can function on its own and as an accessory. Say you choose an embellished collar, layer it under your cozy winter sweater for a pop at the top by pulling the collar over your sweater. The possibilities are endless and flattering, especially after the holiday overindulgence.

Now that we’ve rung in the New Year, it’s time to ring in new wardrobes. Reinvent yourself by reinventing your closet. Let your sweats sweat in their drawer wondering if they’ll ever see the light of day in public again and make sure to invite the versatile chiffon blouse into your closet this new year.
