Black is a basic. It’s one of the best basics out there. Especially in the winter, New York is a sea of black. It can be dark and a little depressing, sure, but that’s not stopping anyone, especially this week’s Fashionista.
This Fashionista is seen in all black with just a hint of white in her outfit; however, her outfit is far from dark and gloomy. She has layered a black coat over a black dress, with a black infinity scarf. She is rocking some awesome glasses, and some flat black boots.
But the bottom half of this outfit, contrasted with the top, is what drew me to this Fashionista. Wearing tights in the winter is a great way to keep your legs warm, but still show them off. A great added bonus is that you can wear your shorter clothing items without freezing too much. But this Fashionista isn’t wearing tights, she is wearing stockings.
Your grandmother might come to mind when you hear the word “stockings,” but put that notion aside. Stockings are coming back, in part thanks to the beautiful Princess across the pond. Yes, Kate Middleton, we’re looking at you. Stockings, particular black ones, look fresh (not stuffy) and add an unexpected texture and look to an outfit. By adding a sheer element to an otherwise opaque outfit, this Fashionista has freshened up her look and made it more noticeable.
If you don’t want just plain black stockings though, you’re in luck. They come in all shapes, sizes, and forms. You can get control top or thigh highs. You can have lace, hearts, stars or polka-dots. Hey, you can even have a tattoo detail. If you can think of it, you can probably get a stocking of it. Just type in ‘sheer hosiery’ on Polyvore, and you won’t believe how many results you get for fun stockings.
While the nude stocking trend might not be catching on for college students, black ones certainly are. And in a sea of matte black tights and ones so patterned it hurts your eyes, these make for a refreshing new look.
