STYLE GURU STYLE: The Fashion Canon

Although I am citing Coach’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection as the essence of my outfit’s character, I really should credit Liv Tyler’s silhouette in Empire Records. The cropped sweater, flared skirt and combat boot combination is *Heart Eyes emoji*. Side note: Happy belated Rex Manning Day (April 8th)!

This season’s Coach runway garments are more ambitious and visually interesting than their country club go-to bags and wallets plastered in department stores. You would think it was two completely separate brands. This collection follows the pack as far as an interest in androgyny. There’s blacks, neutrals and probably 50 shades of gray. Every look ends above the knee in a dramatically stark way and is accompanied by a strong, intimidating boot. I was inspired by the skirt and boot combination (as per usual). I love how it says “I write poems and smell flowers, but I will still rough you up if I need to.” My sweeter spin on androgyny is shown here.

I wore a faded blue crop top with a slightly textured, polka-dot skirt and Dr. Martens combat boots. Where the crop ends and the skirt begins shows just the right amount of midriff to give me Liv’s look. The skirt has a volume that creates an hourglass appearance which visually balances my proportions. Proportion is key in emulating the look properly. The shape of the outfit is universally flattering: something to make the hips look wider and draw attention to the small waist while showcasing legs. It’s the trifecta of allure.

Get My Look: 1. Get a crop top. 2. A tennis skirt or a skirt that has a similar shape. 3. Combat boots.
