Sneakers are both a staple item in any closet as they can be worn comfortably for hours on end. They also allow us to express ourselves, whether you’re a die-hard Vans fan or a Converse lover. Fashion savvy or not, you too probably have a pair of trusty sneakers lying around. As we enter a new year, some of us need a little extra help making our go-to pieces stand out. But don’t worry—we’re making it easier for you. Here’s how six of our Style Gurus created cool outfits with sneakers they already own.

The Shoe: Adidas Superstars

Wear With: Denim on Denim

The early 2000s double-denim trend is back, and so are the timeless shell-toe sneakers. After the explosion of Adidas Superstars on the feet of both the everyday person and celebrities alike, it has become apparent that these shoes are a must-have item. And like the double-denim trend, the look is here to stay. Go for a bold look by wearing both trends at once. This makes for a killer outfit that nods back to the not-so-distant past.

The Shoe: Chuck Taylor All Stars

Wear With: Vintage Florals

You can never go wrong with an old-school touch—both on your feet and in your wardrobe. Keep the look even more grunge-inspired with the addition of a T-shirt layered under a slip dress. It’s a nod to the ’90s that never goes out of style. The vintage look goes hand in hand with the sneakers’ origins from the early 20th century.

The Shoe: Nike Air Jordan Ones

Wear With: Coordinated Colors

Do your sneakers carry more color than the usual neutral pair? Emphasize the unique quality of your shoes through one or more articles of clothing that are just as special and in the same color. This enhances your look by creating repetition and unity in your outfit (aka monochromatic dressing). The bold red in the Nikes shown here pair well with the red puffer jacket. Color blocking by separating the colors with neutrals makes the overall look of the silhouette pleasing to the eye. Fun fact: Air Jordans debuted in 1985, forever changing the standards of the shoe game for years to come and making outfits such as this a reminder.

The Shoe: Vans Slip On

Wear With: Mix and Match Textures

Sometimes all an outfit needs is a little texture. Stand out by combining different textures to create interest in your outfit. Slip on Vans offer a no-fuss vibe, but that doesn’t mean you have to dismiss the other parts of your outfit. For example, some plissé pants paired with a denim jacket and a faux-leather bag create the ultimate variety of textures that make your sneakers appear less dull. Better yet, knotting or tucking in your shirt to create movement in your top can help to tie the entire look together.

The Shoe: Adidas Stan Smiths

Wear With: Fashion-Forward Separates

Show your glam side by adding a standout piece to your outfit. Although many Stan Smiths speak for themselves in any situation (especially since they’re available in many  different styles), a flashy faux-fur coat matched with a pattern underneath can be all you need to step up your sneaker game The wide-leg cut of the pants bring in another element of posh to these otherwise plain pair of sneakers.

The Shoe: Nike Flyknits

Wear With: Minimal Athleisure Wear

Creating cool outfits with sneakers doesn’t necessarily demand you put a lot of planning in the night before you head out. For example, the usual leggings-with-sneakers combo can be enhanced with the simple addition of some refined pieces, such as the trench coat. A polished coat gives off the impression that you have business to attend to, but only after you finish your routine round of yoga. Nike Flyknits are perfect for statements like this because they’re notoriously known for their comfort. They also require minimal effort to put on—just slip on and go!
