There’s just something about braids that adds instant elegance. Beyond the fact that I’m pretty obsessed with watching braid tutorials (they are just so soothing), completing a hairstyle that looks complex but isn’t can also be super satisfying. I spotted these five easy hairstyles from the CF community that are the perfect way to look like you put a ton of effort into your beauty routine with just a few minutes of braiding. On board too? Take a look at the tools you need to re-create each yourself, and put those steady fingers to work!

The Simple Side Braid

Difficulty Level: Beginner

What You’ll Need: Hair ties

Ah, the classic braid—a hairstyle we all know and love. Wearing the braid to the side and pulling out a few face-framing pieces can make this simple look appear effortless. To achieve, you simply need basic braiding skills and a hair tie. Just pull your ponytail to one shoulder and braid from your ear to the ends of your hair.

The Pigtail Braids

Difficulty Level: Beginner

What You’ll Need: Texturizing creme, hair ties

The pigtail braids: a tried-and-true hairstyle of our middle school years. Step this up a notch with the addition of the beret—it’s a fashion-forward favorite at the moment. To create, separate hair into two sections. Smooth Bumble and Bumble Texture Hair(un)dressing Creme ($31) into hair to give it extra hold, and then braid both sections. Secure each side with an elastic.

Braided Bun Hairstyle

The Braided Bun

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

What You’ll Need: Hair ties, bobby pins

The braided bun is another simple, sleek hairstyle—you really only need a hair tie and some bobby pins. Section off the front of your hair that you want to braid and create a French braid down to the nape of your neck. Secure the end of the braid, and add the rest of your hair into a low bun, pinning where needed.

The Double French Braids

Difficulty Level: Advanced

What You’ll Need: Hairspray, hair ties

Another tried and true hairstyle that always looks chic: the classic French braid, which is even more fun when doubled into two. Once you’ve worked your braiding magic on each side of your head, secure with an elastic and spritz with Ouai Haircare Soft Hairspray ($26) to keep everything in place. It has the added effect of pulling your hair out of your face, preparing you for whatever the day has planned for you.

The Half-Up Dutch Braid

Difficulty Level: Advanced

What You’ll Need: Comb, hair ties, pomade

This hairstyle is great for when you don’t have a lot of time before class but you definitely want your hair out of the way—it’s quick, easy, and gives a polished look. To achieve this hairstyle, you will need a comb to part your hair, two hair ties to secure the braids, and John Masters Organics Pomade ($20) to slick back any strays.
