So I have arrived in Shanghai and my first couple of days have been a bit of an emotional roller coaster. One day I’m afraid and overwhelmed, and the next I’m excited and overjoyed. I guess it’s to be expected when you’re another world away. Keeping my eye open for trends and Fashionistas around campus has helped me adjust to my new home. The huge crowds of people and the unfamiliar territory is less intimidating when I’m staying focused on finding someone with a killer outfit; somehow it makes this massive city feel just a bit smaller.
That said, I have noticed that one of the most popular trends among Fudan University’s students are lace baby doll dresses. More often than not, their collars are embellished with rhinestones and pearls, and come in almost any color and print. The look is more cutesy-preppy as opposed to the fem-grungy look of Queen’s students. This Fashionista caught my eye because I loved how her outfit embodied all of the trends that I have observed. She wore it so effortlessly, as though it was a second skin, and posed with such pride as I was taking her picture. For me, wearing a trendy outfit is one thing, but owning it is another. This Fudan Fashionista did just that.
I still have another four months to explore Shanghai’s latest trends and I can’t wait to see what this city has in store!
