Why Every Girl Should Read Rupi Kaur's, "Milk & Honey"

As I grow older, I find it harder to feel inspired and motivated on a daily basis. Maybe it’ s because I stress out more than I should; or because I tend to overthink things. I don’t know about you, but I find myself having an existential crisis frequently, and I always wonder where I stand as an individual, as a woman and as a contributor to society.

It’s very easy to judge ourselves and others very harshly, as it’s also very easy to think negatively about things because finding an optimistic point of view seems so out of reach and almost impossible sometimes. Lately, I’ve been trying to find ways to get out of this uninspired spiral I’ve been in, and in the efforts to feel empowered, I picked up Rupi Kaur’s, Milk & Honey, that had been collecting dust for a while.

Milk & Honey is a collection of poems by the talented poet, Rupi Kaur. It’s filled with inspirational words on femininity, loss, pain, love, survival, and womanhood. Every girl who’s ever felt used, abused, unwanted, confused, or in need of understanding, this is the perfect book to read. Rupi Kaur has a way of putting into words the feelings that we can’t find the words to. She eloquently puts them into stories that makes you think, understand and realize that it’s okay to feel and that it’s 100 percent okay to be whatever type of woman you want to be because everyone is beautiful and should always be respected no matter what.

Here are some of my favorites, and some highlight on how she inspires me to feel empowered and not be too hard on myself.

She reminds us that even when it gets hard to keep going, we still have the power to move and that in itself is powerful.

She brings to light how we are all born beautiful and how convincing ourselves that we’re not is the saddest mistake.

Women on women hate is absurd. We should love and encourage each other instead.

You can be soft and tough at the same time. You don’t have to be just one.

She teaches us to be thankful and appreciative of what we have.

And that we can be our own worst enemy, but we have the power to be our own best friend.
