WHAT WE WEAR—CollegeFashionista

July 9th, 2015 at 2:00am

Whenever I tell someone I work in fashion, they always ask, “Woah so you must, like, really get dressed up for work.” I often respond something to the effect of, “Well if wearing whatever is clean (or seemingly clean) counts as getting dressed up, then yes. Totally.”

Here’s some real talk for you—while we live and breath it, the reality is that working in fashion isn’t always a 24/7 head-to-toe, trend-on-trend-on-trend, Beyoncé glam time moment. In fact, it rarely ever is.

Behind-the-scenes (and sometimes not so behind-the-scenes), there is a team of six full-time ladies who are making sure CollegeFashionista is as #RAD as possible. In this gripping exposé, we give you a glimpse into what we actually wear to the office (as well as some insight into our daily fashion lives).

Amy Levin, Founder and CEO

Wearing Levi cut-off shorts, a Brandy Melville T-shirt and J.Crew sandals.

What is your typical office uniform?

T-shirt and black pants. Simple and easy.

Most recent splurge?

Alaia bucket bag

Your favorite cheap thrill?

Vaseline

Weirdest thing you have ever worn to work?

A Chloé boot that broke midday and turned into half a heel. I had no other shoe option so I had to wear it broken with a weird tape situation.

One trend you are obsessed with?

The model off-duty look. Very easy, carefree yet sexy

One trend you are secretly afraid to try?

Wide leg pants. I love the look, I just need to grow five inches 🙂

Melissa Levin, Editorial Director

Wearing Zella leggings, Banana Republic knit top, Gorjana necklace, Jennifer Fisher “love” bracelets, Sofer evil eye bracelet and the Tokyo Nike Air Max 1 from the Ultra City Collection

What is your typical office uniform?

My typical work look is very “Parisian woman heading to the gym.” That’s, of course, if Parisian women did go to the gym…

Most recent splurge?

I preordered the Mansur Gavriel “Lady” bag for fall. Can’t wait for my splurge to arrive in two-three months.

Who or what inspires your outfit choices?

1990s TV sitcoms, traveling and my sister

One trend you are obsessed with?

Sneakers.

One trend you wish would go away forever?

Flash tattoos. Just stop.

Daily websites you visit

ESPN NHL and The Outnet. I seriously couldn’t have a more diverse web browser history.

Sammy Walsh, Brand Marketing Director

Wearing ASOS leopard sandals, Gap black jeans, ASOS white tank top, NASTY GAL denim shirt, vintage Brahmin purse and my usual jewelry – random smattering of rings, gold Michael Kors watch and Tiffany bracelet.

Your favorite cheap thrill?

Aquaphor Healing Ointment is the best lip balm ever. Trust me, I’ve tried them all.

Who or what inspires your outfit choices?

My environment! What feels comfortable in New York, feels off when I’m home in Wisconsin or traveling. It totally depends on where I am and what I’m doing.

Weirdest thing you have ever worn to work?

I wear my prom dress quite frequently! It’s short and looks casual when paired with a cool jacket. You can’t let Phillip Lim go to waste!

One trend you wish would go away forever?

Maxi dresses and skirts. I think they’ve officially run their course.

One trend you are secretly afraid to try?

Culottes. I love them, but they just never seem to pan out on me.

Must follow social media accounts.

I love to follow fun accounts that are totally different from the type of social media I do at CollegeFashionista. @humansofny, @thedogist, @chrissyteigen, @ohjoy and @walterthechi are at the top of my list.

Jordan Guskind, Brand Partnership Director

My favorite Madewell chambray button-down, Urban Outfitters high-waisted black shorts, Manolo Blahnik lace-up sandals, new Illesteva sunnies (thanks to Aisha for helping me pick out), Fendi satchel and my daily ring stack.

What is your typical office uniform?

My typical office uniform is pretty classic. I wear a lot of basics and heels. Jeans are definitely my go-to and I’ll usually pair them with a solid top and heel of some sort.

What are you wearing on a typical Sunday?

You’ll usually find me in a comfortable pair of jeans, maxi or romper on a Sunday with a lower heel to bop around the city in.

Most recent splurge?

A pair of Alaïa heeled sandals—I have a serious problem and it comes in the form of shoes.

Weirdest thing you have ever worn to work?

I wore a little crop top/vest combo one day and Sammy and Aisha would not stop calling me Britney Spears…

One trend you wish would go away forever?

Leggings as pants. Make the madness stop. LADIES, LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS.

One trend you are secretly afraid to try?

Overalls. I think I hate them, yet I think I love them?

Aisha Hatter, Community Manager

Wearing an oversized striped sweater deal with my favorite black distressed jeans, BCBG sunnies that barely ever leave my face, the best boots and ‘Cruella’ by NARS on my lips.

What are you wearing on a typical Sunday?

Lately, I’ve been into these super comfy vintage denim cut-offs and some kind of sweatshirt situation. Not being 100% comfy on a Sunday is a totally foreign idea to me and I absolutely will not stand for it.

Most recent splurge?

I put all of my Kate Bosworth x Matisse bootie dreams behind me and bought a vintage velvet couch on a whim instead.

Your favorite cheap thrill?

Weird little vintage rings from Brooklyn Charm and key chains—I just bought one of the little monkey emoji covering his eyes because I’m convinced that is what I actually look like in real life.

Weirdest thing you have ever worn to work?

One time I wore a wide-brimmed black hat, a super loud furry jacket, statement sunnies and a pair of white Sam Edelman boots, and just ended up looking like some kind of insane ‘cowboy pimp’.

One trend you are secretly afraid to try?

All-white ensembles and bell bottom jeans.

Beauty must-haves

Almay liquid eyeliner, some OG Great Lash mascara, NARS lip pencils, NARS Illuminator, MAC pressed powder and sparkly Stila eye pencils.

Sarah Darrow, Community Manager

CRW_0395

Wearing a thrifted men’s button-down, a thrifted overall dress, Keds espadrilles, simple gold jewelry, Rimmell London lipstick (#30), LOFT sunglasses and a tote bag from a museum in Paris.

What is your typical office uniform?

I like to experiment with different outfit combinations, but it usually consists of masculine meets feminine meets the closet of a 10-year-old.

What are you wearing on a typical Sunday?

Probably my stretchy, striped culotte pants and an oversized button-down.

Who or what inspires your outfit choices?

Menswear, really random outfits I see on mannequins, people I pass on the street, costumes from movies and TV shows. I have to dress for my body, so that inspires some choices, as well.

Weirdest thing you have ever worn to work?

I have a purple and white kimono from a thrift store in Japan that my sister gave me, if that counts as weird. It takes a lot for me to think an outfit is weird, though.

One trend you are secretly afraid to try?

Hot pants. I don’t fear hot pants, but no one needs to see that.

Must follow social media accounts

Literally anything and everything food related. I also just followed an account about spiral staircases. @foodbabyny. @blackworkers. @thrillist
