WHAT TO WEAR: Winter

The winters in Iowa can be pretty brutal, but for some reason we didn’t have a white Christmas this year. Instead, the snow finally fell just a few days ago so we’ve all been bundling up in our winter coats, hats, scarves and snow boots while trying to look as cute as possible. It’s easy to look bulky and stuck in all black once winter really hits, but by adding a little pop of color you can chase away any winter blues. The transition doesn’t have to be so hard if you have the right pieces for your winter wardrobe.

By layering a lightweight sweater under this red peacoat, a Fashionista can stay warm while still looking effortlessly cute and less bulky than your regular winter coat. Any plaid scarf can add easy style, create dimension and make the outfit more casual for a walk to class. A knee-high black boot keeps everything simple as well as comfortable for sitting in class or grabbing lunch with a friend. The entire outfit is cute and casual and warm enough so that you won’t freeze on a mild winter day in Iowa.

One Simple Change: To take this look from casual day to a morning full of brunching, think about adding a little height to it. Pair your skinny black jeans with a high heel boot or even an over-the-knee pair that add a little lift to your look. Throw on this Topshop beanie to create texture with the faux-fur pom at the top.
