Welcome week is a fun time. It’s the week when your newfound freedom really sinks in. You learn the ins and outs of campus, meet new friends, try out the cafeteria food and try to fit the past 18 years of your life into a cramped dorm room that you are sharing with a stranger. Like I just mentioned, it’s your first opportunity to start making new college friends so you want to look nice, which means no sweatpants. You also want to look approachable though, so don’t go over the top. This is NOT the time to throw on every designer piece you’ve ever splurged on with the hopes of looking cool and fashionable.
This Fashionisto was dressed for the occasion but kept it casual with a not-so-average T-shirt, simple shorts, sneakers and a few accessories. His T-shirt had a printed pocket—a style that is becoming very popular. This kind of shirt gives you obvious comfort but stands out more than a plainly colored T-shirt. It also gives you some room to coordinate the colors of the rest of your outfit. His shorts were navy blue which was a nice change from the usual khaki shorts you see almost all young men donning during the summer months. I liked that his shorts had no side pockets—I am most certainly not a fan of those cargo shorts with more pockets than a suitcase! His white Vans gave his ensemble a very cool and clean look, completed with a pair of simple sunglasses. He also wore a watch which he said was his father’s. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: I am a huge fan of pieces with meaning behind them.
This Fashionisto’s outfit was very appropriate for exploring all the things and people that a new college campus has to offer. He looked trendy and put together, but didn’t give off the impression that he spent the entire morning sifting through his closet (or his not yet unpacked boxes).
One Simple Change: Taking that cute new girl you met at the bookstore out for pizza and a movie? With a few simple changes, this welcome week outfit can be changed to a casual date night outfit. Swap the shorts for a pair of chinos to give off a slightly dressier vibe. Ditch the sunglasses because, let’s be real, everyone hates those people who insist on always wearing shades even when it’s dark out. If you really want to wow your date, bring her a rose and pull her seat out for her!
