WHAT TO WEAR: Weekend Wear

What to Wear

At Marist College, we are a quick train ride away from New York City, and with that proximity, we always keep our style game up. Who knows when a free weekend could turn into a trip to one of the most fashionable cities in the world? When I spotted this Fashionista, I immediately noticed that she was ready to tackle anything. Her style is perfectly primed for a weekend on campus or in the city. Her vest and boots offset her incredible Chanel skirt in such a way that it could take her from browsing for books at Barnes & Noble to dinner without breaking a sweat. Her outfit allows her the freedom of spontaneity perfect for the weekend when you don’t have your whole life mapped out.

This Fashionista’s attention to trend without sacrificing her own style also struck me. Midi skirts were seen all over fall 2013 runways, notably Christian Dior and Calvin Klein, and denim vests have been serious closet staples especially since this past summer. However, it’s her unique mix of high and low, as well as masculine and feminine elements combined with her utilization of bold accessories that truly make the outfit all her own. A tough, distressed vest is given a quirky and whimsical touch with the help of a flowing skirt and soft cashmere sweater. The hard edge of the vest and boots counteracts the sweetness of the sweater and skirt in the perfect way. This Fashionista also manages the proportions of her clothes perfectly. To counteract the length of her skirt she chose a cropped vest, rather than working with an oversized piece.

To achieve this look for yourself, find a great midi skirt. While I’m partial to tulle and chiffon, any material can work. This Fashionista’s skirt was Chanel, but Zara has had great options recently. Next, you’ll need a sweater in a print or bold color. Madewell has some that are cozy, but light enough to layer. A cropped denim vest, preferably distressed is vital, but there’s no need to splurge! American Eagle Outfitters has affordable vests in great washes. Finish off the look with some booties and killer accessories that will have you ready to conquer anything this weekend.

One Simple Change: Swap the skirt for some high-waisted shorts and a pair of tights for a look that’s perfect for class. It makes for a more casual and academic look that will have you earning straight As!
