WHAT TO WEAR: Vacation

July 23rd, 2015 at 2:00am

Hey there Fashionistas and Fashionistos! I am excited to currently be writing to you all the way from the Pacific Ocean! As I embarked with my family on my first cruise, I gained a lot of new knowledge about life at sea. It has definitely been a learning curve. For those of you planning a cruise in the future, here are some things you should know and be prepared for: a cruise ship is huge (you need to take an elevator everywhere you go), cellphone service is nonexistent (I don’t know why I expected AT&T to have floating cell towers for the convenience of sailors and cruise vacationers), Internet is expensive (but being cut off from the world and social media for a week is kind of nice), whales won’t do flips and jumps for you just because your camera is ready and a wardrobe of dresses and heels is not practical.

I figured out the first day of the cruise that wearing a flowing dress and heels on a windy boat is not the best idea. Most of my packed outfits are cute in theory, but just not practical while making our way through waves and wind. It has been a struggle trying to hold down my dresses and stay balanced in my heels. Many people pull out their dresses and stilettos for formal dinner nights, but the veteran cruisers know better than to wear that outfit for more than a couple of hours.

I love this Fashionista’s look because it is cute without sacrificing practicality or comfort. Her asymmetrical, patterned skort is unique and perfect for the weather at sea. She is smart by pairing her outfit with sandals. Walking on a boat is hard enough without wearing heels. Save yourself the embarrassment by packing flat sandals. She adds to her unique look with a collection of colorful bracelets and a temporary Henna tattoo.

One Simple Change: If the temperature drops, another practical boat trend is palazzo pants. Just like a stylish skort, palazzo pants can be dressed up and cute while still being functional and comfortable. Make sure to pack a couple pairs of pants to be prepared for unexpected cold weather.  With limited suitcase space, it’s also smart to pack neutral tops that can be paired with different bottoms. This Fashionista could easily switch out her skort with palazzo pants and have another cute look for a cooler day on her vacation.
