What to Wear

Moving to Missouri last fall met me with a strange realization: Moisture can indeed fall from the sky in other forms than snow. And similar to homework, or  the drama of Lauren Conrad’s life during her run on The Hills, when it rains it pours. Rainy days are the times to rely on simple pieces that are both functional and fashionable.

The adjustment to a rain-friendly wardrobe was a soggy one. I quickly learned that wet tennis shoes lack any sort of function, and flip-flops are more of a safety threat when paired with puddles. Rain boots are a necessity here at Mizzou, where rainy days are something to grow used to come spring. It would be a lie to say they are limited to merely rainy days—rain boots make a statement regardless of the weather. A great seasonal transition from winters’ riding boots, these Hunter boots are a common sight around campuses everywhere.

While rain boots do make a statement, it’s how you dress them up that seal the deal. In a sea of windbreakers embellished with Greek letters and monograms, how refreshing to see a classic trench on a college campus. This H&M number gives any gloomy day a more grown up, polished look.

Updating classics is the name of the game in fashion, and this Fashionista does just that by pairing her boots and trench with leather leggings. Offering a contrast in finishes, these leggings give a timeless look a more modern touch. Proving that when paired correctly, leather leggings do in fact have a place in springtime fashion. Urban Outfitters is the place to look when it comes to leggings of any variety of textures and prints.

Rainy days don’t thrill many of us, options for rainy day outfits included. But a few timeless classics come a long way, especially when you give them your own twist. Rain or shine, always make an entrance.

One Simple Change: If rain isn’t in the forecast on your spring day, swap out the rain boots for a pair of flats and you’re ready to walk around campus, or hit lunch with friends.
