WHAT TO WEAR: Meeting With a Professor

What to Wear

A classic business skirt is a must-have for any young woman. High-waisted skirts are flattering on almost all body types. It can be dressed up or down depending on what it is worn with. Often they come in various colors, patterns and prints that look fashionable and professional.

I spotted this Fashionista styling a very put-together look. The first thing that struck me about her ensemble was that her plaid coat did not compete with, but rather contrasted nicely with, her Burberry-style plaid skirt. The two different sizes, colors and styles of plaid do not clash and they allow for variety in the initial glance at the outfit. A pencil skirt like what the Fashionista is wearing might be on the pricey side, but is totally worth splurging for. It can be worn to interviews, internships, conferences and other professional events.

Tucked into her high-waisted pencil skirt is a plain white top. Since there is a jacket over it, a tank top would serve the purpose, but a short sleeve top would work equally well. Her second layer, a lightweight white jacket, dresses the outfit down enough to be suitable for every day wear.

Black tights and a pair of light brown, low-heeled boots add a hip vibe to the versatile outfit. Pulling it all together are the black and white plaid medium-length coat and the brown, shoulder book bag. This oversized tote from Urban Outfitters does not have long handles like the bag pictured with the Fashionista, but it is reversible! It would be great to fit your laptop, notebook and the most recent issue of Vogue.

One Simple Change: After discussing future dreams and plans over Starbucks with your professor, toss on a pair of burgundy stretch pants for a subtle pop of color and you’re ready for that casual date you’ve been looking forward to all week.
