As college students, we have a ton of priorities. From finishing our mountains of reading for our classes, to making it to all of the meetings for the clubs we’ve joined, to meeting with professors during office hours to make sure we properly understand the material we’re currently learning, we manage to pack a lot into each day. Doing so leaves us little to no time to dwell on what we should wear, which usually results in us merely throwing on the first clean pair of jeans and T-shirt we find in our drawers while rushing out the door. With all we have to do, it can be hard to keep in mind that what we wear actually leaves a strong impression, particularly when engaging in the latter activity mentioned above: meeting with a professor.
When I spotted this Fashionista on campus, I realized just how perfect her outfit was for the aforementioned occasion. She wore a beige, patterned dress with brown tights and brown ankle boots. She then paired the look with an oxblood leather jacket and her black backpack (and of course a cup of coffee — the must-have accessory for every girl on the go).
Overall, her outfit was cute and clearly well thought out while still being incredibly professional. When meeting with a professor, it’s crucial to maintain the right balance between looking too casual and too trendy. Since you’re meeting the professor in the first place, chances are you’ll be meeting with them sometime again. Professors can end up being wonderful mentors and contacts for the future, so it’s never a bad idea to go that extra distance to impress them with how professional you look. This Fashionista was able to incorporate a touch of her personality and style with her quirky printed dress, but she kept the look polished (albeit adorable!) by working in her opaque tights, ankle boots and jacket.
If you just finished sending out an e-mail to meet up with one of your professors in the near future, take a note from this Fashionista and swap out your usual jeans and T-shirt for something slightly more professional. Miuccia Prada once said, “What you wear is how your present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is an instant language.” Before you speak to your professor, let your outfit do some talking to let him or her realize what a serious (and stylish) student you are.
One Simple Change: This outfit would also work perfectly for a big presentation. Just remember that nerves can make you toastier than usual, so leave the jacket behind.
