WHAT TO WEAR: Internship

From the Editor, What to Wear

Besides juggling a busy school schedule and social life, many Fashionistas and Fashionistos are also interning during the semester as well. The stress of interning does not just come from the added time commitment. People often think that interning means one thing: the dreaded suit and tie.

Well, Fashionistas/os, I am here to dispel that horrid myth. In most cases, there is no need to suit up to an internship. In fact, the lady with the final word on everything in fashion, Anna Wintour, has publicly said that for an interview or internship at Vogue, the wrong thing to wear would be a suit. If Anna says its not necessary, then Fashionistas/os, it is not necessary.

So what should you wear to an internship then? When I spotted this Fashionisto, I knew I had found the answer to that allusive question. Even better, his look is comprised of everything every Fashionisto should already own! A bright blue button-down is the perfect alternative to classic white. The color is universally flattering on most skin tones and adds some personality to a look. Roll up the sleeves to make the look more relaxed and not so stuffy. Next, put on your favorite tie. Opt for a tie that shows a bit of your personality. I am not talking about sporting neckwear with cartoon characters by any means; but a nice pattern adds some pizazz to the classic silhouette.

While Fashionistas have pencil skirts and dresses, Fashionistos have the opportunity to sport some leg too with a pair of well-tailored shorts. Choosing khaki over denim keeps the look office appropriate with still young and fresh.

Finish the look with a pair of standout shoes. His blue, lace-up sneakers are sure to be a memorable fashion moment around the office.

With a look like this Fashionisto’s, your work and your wardrobe are sure to get you hired after the internship!

One Simple Change: Heading straight from your internship to a study group? Drop your briefcase off at home and switch it out for a backpack to take you into the wee hours of the night.
