It’s April. For most that’s explanation enough on the stress tunnel cloud that consumes these four weeks. It’s internship season. Applications are being submitted and acceptance letters are hitting the mail route. While everyone is worried about securing the positions, I have an unfortunate rude awakening; the work doesn’t end there. I mean of course there is the actual work involved in a summer internship, but looking the part is the same nine to five requirement. Being thrown to the bottom of the totem pole doesn’t usually do much for your confidence, but it can do wonders to your wardrobe. Dressing to be taken seriously is just as important as getting your boss’ Starbucks order right. So bring on the business casual classics and that extra shot of espresso.
If you haven’t realized already, stripes are a staple. The print has the ability to be dressed up or dressed down regardless of the fabric. This Gap cotton top is dressed up with the skirt and accessories. When dressed up, stripes have a preppy allure, an allure that can get you noticed for all the right reasons. Whether it’s your Jackie Kennedy moment or just another day at the office, don’t neglect the power of grown up prints to add something special.
If you asked me a year ago what came to mind when “high-waisted skirts” were mentioned, I would’ve rolled my eyes—in my mind an image of the heinous, spandex skin tight numbers that plagued 2011 with all of its might. But I am happy to report that we made it through that tough time in one piece. This J.Crew khaki number is perfected with the rouched waistline. This skirt definitely does not get lost in the sea of khaki with its waist accentuating cut. Here is the perfect example of how to add some life to both khaki, and business casual.
As previously discussed, there is work to be done as an intern, much of it being on your feet. Ballet flats are a great piece to complete a business casual look, but wearing them in before the job is a necessity. Spending hours running around in every which direction doesn’t do wonders on the ankles. So put those strappy wedges you got for summer back into your closet, and reach for something that can move with you. Here, Vince Camuto’s patent leather pair is the perfect aesthetic addition to dress up a typically functional piece.
One Simple Change: Meeting up with friends for a casual hang out after work? Ditch the skirt for shorts and the ballet flats for a pair of Converse. This striped top can be taken from work to play in two simple steps, and from an uptown to downtown cool.
