WHAT TO WEAR: Formal

November 17th, 2015 at 2:00am

For those of you who thought you left prom in high school, you are in for a wake up call. College and the professional world are full of “semi-formal” and “formal” events. Whether you are involved in Greek life or not, chances are high that you will have to attend a date night, semi-formal, formal, wedding, etc. before you graduate. Why not be the best dressed Fashionista there?

The only thing that is harder than finding a date to a formal event is finding the perfect dress. It can be difficult to determine just how “formal” a formal event is supposed to be. You do not want to be that girl who shows up in a ball gown while everyone else is in cocktail dresses, but you also do not want to show up in a cocktail dress while everyone else is in ball gowns. My thoughts on the subject take inspiration from the famous Oscar Wilde quote, “you can never be overdressed or overeducated.” Obviously do not wear a wedding dress to someone else’s wedding, but it never hurts to be a little more dressed up than everyone else.

There are so many different directions you can go in for formal attire—classic, trendy, girly—the list goes on. This Fashionista went trendy for her formal look. Velvet has been seen everywhere from the runway to celebrities, and she pulled off the trend perfectly. Her emerald velvet dress paired with a simple gold necklace and nude heels makes for the best combination of trendy and classy.

One Simple Change: This dress is perfect for a formal occasion, but if you wanted to dress it down for a casual cold weather outfit it would be super easy. Trade the heels for ankle boots and add a plaid scarf and leather jacket and you are good to go! Velvet is great to dress-up or dress-down!
