WHAT TO WEAR: Date Night

Greetings my fashion friends! I hope the week has been fashionable on your end, as it has been for me. My week was filled with season nine of Project Runway, to which I heard many phrases. Of the many phrases, one stood true in my walks around campus: “Less is more.” This Fashionista embodies just that on her way to Mai Thai for a date in downtown Chicago.

Now, dates can be tricky. You want to be your best and look your best. Many times, dressing to impress can be simple; it doesn’t have to be over the top or over-accessorized. This look (a pair of classy flats, elegant yet casual black dress and a denim jacket in case it gets chilly) talks for itself; it doesn’t need much else. For one, it’s hard to go bad with the color black. It’s simple, but loud enough to say “look at me!” and quiet enough for another color to enter the space. That is why the denim jacket works—not only for the purpose of keeping warm in Chicago’s bipolar weather, but for becoming an accessory to the outfit as a whole. Its light-washed material contrasts the black and upholds a spring into summer trend of lighter-colored clothing. As a whole, the look works well together and gives the Fashionista a great silhouette.

And as this Fashionista’s date proceeds to either take off or put on her jacket, he’ll get a glance of the patterned lace in the back of the dress and her tattoo. It’s the perfect combination of sexy and modest for a date night out!

One Simple Change: If you wanted to change this outfit so that it could transition into a night out with the girls, I would first lose the jacket and the flats. Then I would add a skinny belt (I recommend a red one for a fun pop), some wedges that matched the color belt you choose and a statement piece, like a necklace. But remember, less is more! So don’t go too big with the necklace or other accessories; it should never overwhelm the whole outfit or carry it.
