WHAT TO WEAR: Cold Weather

June 2nd, 2015 at 2:10am

Bipolar: it’s the only suitable word to describe the weather in Denver, Colorado. Ask anyone. It’s a long-standing joke between the Coloradoans residing in the Rocky Mountains and even those living down in the plains. Not only is it snowy in Colorado, it’s also rainy, windy and unbelievably sunny all in the very same day. You might see a foot of snow fall to the ground overnight, only to see it all melt away by noon. Coloradoans know that no outfit is complete without some sort of layer piece you can throw on or ditch just in case the weather takes a turn. Even though the weather man tries his hardest, the only thing you can be sure of is that the weather is unpredictable.

So, how does one deal with indecisive weather? Expect the best, but plan for the worst. You have to be ready for cold weather. The easiest way to do that? Throw on a comfy cardigan. Bonus points if you can say it was something borrowed and something blue. I caught this Fashionista running a few quick errands. Having just hopped out of the shower and ran to the store sans makeup, she was hesitant to let me take her picture. When I told her I loved her laid back style, she laughed saying, “But I just took a shower; I stole my dad’s cardigan and this is my boyfriend’s shirt.” Well, I guess you could say she has good genes. And good jeans. Her steel gray jeans paired with her blue cardigan and O’NEILL graphic T-shirt shout “cool girl.” Similar to the scene on her T-shirt, her style is easy, breezy and laid back, just like the ocean. Anchoring her outfit together are her nutmeg brown ankle boots and her surprise accessory, a throwback blue sports watch. Although she wears her father’s cardigan, her boyfriend’s shirt and a men’s watch, she balances her outfit between a tomboy and girl-on-the-run feel by choosing skinny jeans versus something looser.

The past few weeks have been unseasonably wet and dreary for May. There hasn’t been a day without at least a light drizzle. Two weekends back, it even snowed nearly a foot! That being said, this Fashionista had her cold weather style down pat just in time for the afternoon showers. You could even say that she weathered the storm quite well. Even though the sun did grace the skies for a brief hour or two, rain started to fall just as I was finishing taking some detail shots.

One Simple Change: Ditch the cardigan and instead try a leather jacket and some studded kicks. This will transition the outfit from laid back to more of a tough girl vibe, perfect for rocking out at an outdoor concert.
