WHAT TO WEAR: Cold Weather

What to Wear

D.C. weather can be quite unpredictable, totally messing with everyone’s fashion decisions. One day in January it’ll be 30 degrees and freezing, and the next thing you know it’s 65 and sunny. We can’t switch our winter closets to spring if there are still cold days to come! We have been very lucky in D.C. this winter and have bypassed the frigid days of the season. However, for most of January we have experienced a biting cold with winds and rain, making us bring out the scarves, hats and layers to face the winter weather.

As Rebecca Minkoff recently posted to her Facebook referring to winter fashion, “Layers are key.” This Fashionisto’s impeccable style shows exactly what we mean by this phrase. A long sleeve, chambray underneath a cardigan, underneath a leather jacket and topped off with a scarf—is a warm and fashionable approach to conquer chilly weather. His dark jeans and beanie add texture to the look, as does his cardigan that’s a mix of gray, black and white shades.

For both Fashionistas and Fashionistos it’s important to layer this season. Not just because it will keep you warm, but because it’s so chic! Layering sweaters or cardigans over Oxfords or scarves over jackets is a great way to add texture and even a pop of color into your look. To fully capture the layering concept, Urban Outfitters is a great source. I’m a huge fan of color so my eye was drawn to the Salt Valley Four Corners Cardigan; however, for a more masculine approach, check out the very handsome Hawkings McGill Chevron Cardigan. For women, I’m obsessed with the texture that can be brought into an outfit through sweaters. Check out the Ombre Foiled Fisherman’s Sweater—a personal favorite of mine.

I’m a firm believer in “real men wear scarves,” so guys—never be afraid to! Ralph Lauren has some fantastic scarves for men, similar to the knitted one seen on this Fashionisto. I also think they can add texture and/or color to any outfit, so my favorite on the Urban Outfitters’ site is obviously the Northwest Cowichan Scarf. For the ladies, I recommend getting your scarves from Anthropologie. They’re full, soft and amazing. I have so many favorites, but for the upcoming spring season, I would recommend the Adelaide Gauze Scarf. It’s floral, beautiful and brings so much color to any outfit.

For any cold winter day, always remember to layer. Whether it’s with a cardigan over a graphic top, or a scarf over a sweater, layering is one of the hippest trends of the season. Stay warm!

One Simple Change: For the Fashionistas out there, I love wearing my combat boots with calf-length socks on cold days! I pull them up over my skinnies and have their design stick out of the top of my boot. You can do this with riding boots, as well. It can add some color and a whole new approach to layering! Fashionistos, don’t be afraid of color! While all-black looks are sleek, really try to change it up with some color in your pants or button-downs.
